Electric Hoedown

For hundreds of years, musicians, minstrels and entertainers told tales of great deeds and provided a structure for social events. Singing and dancing became important elements of society. At the end of the 20th Century, with the arrival and development of sophisticated recording tools, this changed dramatically as it became possible for one person to create high quality music in isolation. “Individuals” were able to dominate contemporary music, driven by large corporations and increasingly sophisticated computers and samplers. Mainstream music developed a focus on the importance of the artiste and the long tradition of music in the community was usurped.

Electric Hoedown is a project aimed at returning the role of music to the community itself. Villages throughout the land are becoming populated by commuters who do not know each other. Knowing our neighbours is becoming a thing of the past. If we can bring people together through raucous and traditional music and dance, whether in streets, village halls, universities or even barns, our mission will have been accomplished.

Similarly, we seek to bring songs and tunes which have been sidelined through time back to prominence with the use of electric instruments. We like the power and reverb which is available on the electric violin. We like the ability to change the fundamental sound of an electric drum kit, e.g. from rock to steel drums. We like the ability to create synthesised electric sounds. We also like the idea of returning old tunes and songs to contemporary times and returning dance to its traditional place in the community.

Electric Hoedown is a group of people rediscovering and reinterpreting old tunes and songs. In the same tradition, we will produce new tunes and songs commenting on our own times. We also hope that our audiences will enjoy dancing the dances which our ancestors did before us. Barndances evolved in parts of Europe for many reasons. We believe the hoedown had similar origins in the US. We hope that groups of people who do not know each other meet and become friends with their neighbours as a result of our events.

In recent years, watching a band has often involved audiences sitting down and watching a group of people perform for a number of hours. We hope to reverse this process and that Electric Hoedown will cause audiences to interact with and get to know each other. We will certainly do our best to achieve this!
